WHAT IS BIOMASS?

Woodchip
Woodchip is Commonly Used For Biomass

The term biomass refers to the natural, biological material, which is used as fuel for things like electricity production or heating. Forestry Research describes biomass as being predominantly plant-based material, such as forestry waste. However, food waste is also commonly used.

The waste material is incinerated, and the heat is used to generate energy for electricity and heating. This is also a common method for disposing of waste which would otherwise go to landfill. In some cases, biomass material can also be converted into fuel.

WHY DOES BIOMASS NEED TO BE SCREENED?

To get the highest possible amount of energy from biomass material, any impurities or non-organic material first need to be removed. This is especially important in the production of liquid and gas fuels.

Furthermore, automatic biomass systems require the material to be a uniform shape and size.

To use the example of woodchip, a common by-product of the forestry and arboriculture industry, the chip would need to be separated from any leaves, mulch or rocks, which may be mixed into the material.

WHAT ARE THE OPTIONS FOR SCREENING BIOMASS?

There are currently plenty of options on the market when it comes to biomass-specific screening plant. These machines are typically static or large tracked machines.

COMMON OPTIONS FOR SCREENING BIOMASS

  • Trommel Type Screeners

  • Disc Screens

  • Static Screens

  • Flip-Flow Screens

Whilst many of the machines above can quickly screen considerable amounts of material, there are several drawbacks, especially for smaller contractors, such as tree surgeons, forestry contractors, landscapers and other land-based industries.

DRAWBACKS OF TRADITIONAL SCREENERS

  • They can require quite a lot of space.

  • Increased fuel costs.

  • Can require additional machinery and operators to load material.

  • Difficult to transport, in some cases requiring HGVs.

  • Can only be used for processing biomass material.

  • Purchase costs can be prohibitively expensive.

  • Additional maintenance and servicing costs.

  • Many of these systems crush and shred material when screening.

It is in this instance that screening buckets present a unique solution, ideal for independent contractors and smaller operations.

GYRU-STAR COMPACT SCREENING SYSTEMS

Gyru-Star Compact Screening Systems are the marketing leader in the compact screening sector. Their poly-star rotors screen material without crushing, shredding or tearing, making them ideal for processing materials such as woodchips for biomass.

With fragment sizes available from 10-40mm, and models to suit carriers from 1 to 30 tons, Gyru-Star screening buckets allow you to maximise the efficiency and versatility of your excavator, loader, tractor, backhoe, telehandler or skid steer loader.

BENEFITS OF GYRU-STAR SCREENING BUCKETS

  • Fast, efficient screening across the entire range.

  • Low maintenance with a carbon belt drive system and sealed bearings throughout (won’t contaminate the material with oil or grease either).

  • Reduce fuel and operator costs by using your existing machinery.

  • ‘Plug and play’ system reduces downtime.

  • No crushing, shredding or tearing of the material.

  • Screen material anywhere the carrier can go.

  • Doesn’t waste valuable space on site or in your yard when not in use.

  • Lower purchase cost than other types of screener.
